Linux Game Database

The Linux Game Database is a list of games that are native to Linux. The web site is very new but already has listings of what its creator XOIE refers to as “the important free games”. The list of commercial games for Linux is shorter but the list is growing on a daily basis. One of the great features of the Linux Game Database is the search feature where you can apply an extensive list of filters to the search results. For example you can look for a single player role playing game with a fantasy theme and then sort the results by the rating given by other LGDB users. For us Debian people there is a feature that allows you to search games that are in Debian repositories. The web site currently displays scree shots for all of the games as well as game play videos for many of the titles in the list. Visitors who choose to register at LGDB will have the ability to rate games, post comments, as well as use a “I play this game” feature on the display page for the games you play.

Though there have been numerous similar web sites that have listings of Linux compatible games I think LGDB really got it down right this time. These games are native to Linux and don’t require WINE or other emulators to play them which is a big difference. The graphics, videos, screen shots, and search abilities teamed with the Debian repository search feature make LGDB a hands down winner in the Linux gaming arena. The Linux Game Database is still pretty new and already it has a decent user base and great features which I think will only continue to grow as XOIE has more time to put in to his project.
